Question: I am looking to rent a vintage car for my wedding next July 2009. Is there any place that does this in the lower mainland? I am looking for a Beauford, The Ford Model T,The Princess is convertible, ect. Thanks (From: Jen in Langley)

Answer: Hi,Jen:

You might find someone who will Limousine (drive) you for your wedding, but I doubt that you would be able to find someone willing to rent out their classic car.

Your best bet is to go to a local cruise night or car show and ask around.

Good luck!

Question: Were there any 402 Malibus made in 1971 in Canada
in the Oshawa Body Plant?

How many SS s came out of Canada in 1971?

Sorry, I don't have production figures for the Oshawa plant for 1971.

Question: Hi Bob thank you for your help.
Can you tell me what to use to clean & protect a convertible top & interior.
Thank you Nick
(From: Nick in Barrie)

Answer: Hi, Barrie:

If your top is Vinyl, Meguiar's makes some really good convertible top conditioners and cleaners. They also make many different interior cleaning/detailing products for any interior.

If your top is Canvas, the care is more complicated. If this is the case, I'd consult your manufacturer's recommendations or see a convertible top specialist.

Cheers!

Car ads are free, but we've been experiencing some problems with that portion of the site. Please feel free and give it a try, though. First, you have to sign up (http://www.canadianclassiccars.com/forms/signup.php) and then use your email address and password to log on to the Buy & Sell section (http://www.canadianclassiccars.com/admin/sale_cars.php)

Question: Hello:

I have a 69 Pontiac GTO soft top. I haven't been able to put the top down because I need hydraulic fluid/oil. I haven't been able to find any. One place told me to use transmission fluid, but I would rather use the hydraulic fluid for convertibles. Would you have any idea where we would be able to get some. We would love to be able to put the top down, particularly for my brother's wedding in a couple of weeks.
Thank you, kindly!
-hannah-maria
(From: Hannah-Maria in London, ON/Fort Erie, ON)

Answer: Hi, Hannah-Maria:

Most old GM convertible top systems used Type "A" transmission fluid as a hydraulic oil. These days, it's called "Dexron III" or "Mercon". All should work with your top.

Good luck!

Bob

Question: i have a 1965 Meteor Montcalm 4 door hard top would like to know if its a Canadian made car how many were made. I would also like to know what other car it is comparable to as I can't seem to find parts listings for the Montcalm. If you could help it would be appreciated. Thanks Bob (From: Bob Hogg in Somewhere in Canada)

Answer: Hi, Bob:

The 1965 Meteor Montcalm was built and sold exclusively in Canada to give Mercury dealers a "Popularly Priced" car to sell. The body is the same as the Mercury Monterey except for a standard roofline, rather than the reverse backlight on the regular Mercurys. The interior trim is that of a Ford Galaxie 500.

Ford of Canada made over 33,000 units, making the Meteor the 4th best selling nameplate in Canada.

Bob

Question: Hi,i just bought a 1970 Chevelle with VIN number 1366901534283,can you decode it for me if possible, and do you know where I can track down the history of this car? (From: De Vos Tom in Belgium)

Answer: Hi, Tom:

Here`s your decode:

1 = Make = Chevrolet
3 = Series = Chevelle & Monte Carlo
6 = Even number = V8 engine (odd numbers indicate 4 or 6 cylinders)
69 = Body Style = 4 door sedan
0 = Model Year = 1970
1 = Assembly Plant = Oshawa, Ontario. Canada
534283 = Sequential Serial Number

Since your car was built in Canada, you can contact General Motors Canada Vintage Services and have the whole history of your car sent to you for a reasonable fee. Their web site is:

Good Luck!

Question: I have a 56 ford with a three speed overdrive. It keeps popping out of second gear. The local shop wants between 1500 and 2000 dollars to fix it. I have a line on a brand new never been used three speed for 400 dollars. I have been told that I can mate the tail piece (Overdrive unit) to the back of the three speed with no problems. Is this possible. My overdrive works perfectly. Thank you. (From: Alex Desjardins in Lethbridge, alberta)

Answer: Hi, Alex:

We're really not any better than shade tree mechanics here. You should perhaps post your question on a Ford Specific web site, like the Crown Victoria Owners Association. Here is a link to their site:

http://clubs.hemmings.com/clubsites/crownvictoria/home.cfm

Good luck!

Question: I was wondering if you could tell me more about the canadian made 77 Nova concours with the factory 3 speed on the floor. I was told that it was one of twenty made is that so. (From: Brian in Nebraska)

Answer: Hi, Brian:

The information I have is that 1977 Novas were not assembled in Canada. As far as I can tell, Novas were made at Leeds, Van Nuys, Tarrytown and Willow Run.

My information may be wrong, especially if your Body Tag says Made in Canada.

If your car does say Made in Canada, you can contact GM Canada Vintage Services and, for about $50, you can get your car's entire history including how many models like yours were made.

You can contact them at:

http://www.gm.ca/gm/english/shopping/parts/vintage

Good luck!

Question: Regarding the Question how to keep mice out of your car. Try Throwing in a few Bounce sheets . It seems to work. (From: Elerd Eyolfson in Gimli Manitoba)

Thanks for the Tip!

Bob

Question: Hello,

I live in a rural area, and I was wondering if you have any great ideas on how to keep mice out of the car?

thank you

Matthew
(From: Matthew in Regina)

Answer: Hi, Matthew:

Mice seem to hate mothballs. It might make your car smell like Aunt Lucy's house, but it works.

If your car is in a garage that has electricity, we've had pretty good luck with an electronic mouse chaser called Pest Chaser:

Question: Hi, My husband has purchased a 66 Canadian Valiant Signet, 2 dr hardtop, 273 engine. He is looking for replacement parts, such as headlight bezels and wheel opening moldings and is having a hard time locating any of these items. Can you give me any info on places where these things can be found and are available to Canada? Any info on parts for this car would be appreciated! Thanks for your help (From: Brenda Gillespie in Ayr, Ontario)

Answer: Hi, Brenda:

Well, you probably won't find these parts NOS.

Your best bet is automotive flea markets and swap meets (Barrie has a great one twice a year). You can also contact National Moparts in Beaverton, Ontario. They have a large collection of 1960's Mopars that they part out.

I have one of those cars myself and have always found the parts I need in Barrie.

Good luck!

Bob

Question: Hi Bob,

Just wondering if you could decode his vin # for me ? 9F01F204759.
It should be a 1969 Mustang. Thanks for the help.

(From: Courtney in Carrying Place)

Answer: Hi, Courtney:

Here you go:

9 = Year = 1969

F = Plan = Dearborn, MI

01 = Body Series = 2 Door Hardtop

F = Engine = 302 2v V8

204759 = Sequential Serial Number.

Cheers!

Question: I have a 1969 canadian made chevelle with 100000 original miles on it....Original Drivetrain and transmission......Needs alittle body work and new paint but are they worth more than usa made chevelles due to low numbers made in canada? It's a 350/300hp auto Sport coupe...thank you (From: mike kroll in milwaukee wisconsin)

Answer: Hi, Mike:

Canadian made cars lost their unique identity after the signing of the Auto Pact in 1966. Even though your car was made in Canada, it should be pretty much Identical in build and in value than a US made car.

Regards,

Bob

Question: I wont to know is there much difference between 1954 chev sedan chassis and a 1955-56 chassis chev sedan chassis (From: peter in autralia)

Answer: Hi, Peter:

Yes, 54 and 55-56 cars are completely different. The 55-56-57's are related to each other, even though most parts do not interchange.

Bob

Question: Hi Bob i just bought a 69 gto and in the trunk there is surface rust.Should i remove all rust to the metal before i prime it?And what should i use to finish it up?
Thank you Nick
(From: Nick in barrie)

Answer: Hi, Nick:

If you're sure that it's just surface rust and all you want to do is keep it from getting worse, I've used POR 15 with excellent results. And the best part is you don't have to grind the surface rust off, you just clean it first then paint the POR 15 right over it.

Good luck!

Bob

Question: Good morning.
I've run out of luck searching VIN information and am hoping you might help (although I did notice your note regarding not being a "VIN decoder" site, I hope you can still help me out).
We recently purchased a piece of land and along with it we received title to an old truck parked on the back of the lot. We've transferred ownership and we are now interested in learning about the truck... the VIN number is 6131405040 - can you tell us what information this provides us?

Thank you!!!
Jennifer

42 = Model/Series = LeMans G.T.O.
67 = Body Style = 2 Door Convertible
9 = Model Year = 1969
B = Assembly Plant = Baltimore. MD
117035 = Sequential Serial Number.

There you go!

Bob

Question: I am rebuilding a 1955 second series GMC pickup. I am interested in having it look as near as possible to original. I have not been able to find an "in dash fit"
GMC replacement radio. A modern AM/FM/CD is preferable even if some components mount separately. Thanks for your help.
(From: Jack Gobin in Oklahoma, USA)

Answer: Hi, Jack:

Here's a couple of links for you:

http://www.vintagevibes.net/

http://www.casmfg.com/index.htm

What I did in my car was get a small powered amplifier that fit in the glove box and I hooked up my MP3 player, which mounts with a belt clip on the ashtray. It works a treat without defacing the interior of the car.

Good luck!

Bob

Question: Hello, pretty soon I get a 1972 Ford LTD Brougham 2door with a 429 engine. The vin is 2W6SN135539. Can you tell me how many of this cars have been built and where, if it´s a thunderjet or a cobrajet engine, what kind of transmission it has,how many HP this car has and the difference between a LTD and a Galaxie 500. Thanks a lot from Germany, Guenter (From: Guenter Poeltl in Germany)

Answer: Hi, Guenter:

There were 50,409 LTD Brougham 2 door hardtop coupes made for 1972.

Your engine is neither a Thunderjet or a Cobrajet but a "Thunderbird 429" and left the factory with 212 net hp at 4400 rpm. Your transmission is most likely a 3 speed automatic, but it's impossible to tell which one it is from the VIN. That information is available on the Certification tag on the rear face of the driver's door.

The LTD Brougham was the "top of the line" Ford for 1972 and was two steps up from the Galaxie 500 series. These were usually trimmed very luxuriously.

Finally, your VIN decodes as follows:

2 = Model Year = 1972
W = Assembly Plant = Wayne, Indiana
68 = Body Code = 2 dr. Hardtop LTD Brougham (you put "S", but I'm sure it's an "8")
N = Engine = 429 Thunderbird V8
135539 = Sequential Serial Number

If you can get me the rest of the information from your Vehicle Certification Label, I can tell you a little more about your car.

Regards,

Bob

Question: During the restoration process the vehicle certification label that is attached to the rear face of the drivers door was misplaced. Can it be reproduced or a facsimilie made if the VIN is provided. The vehicle is a 1970 Ford Ranchero (From: Patrick Rohovie in Lethbridge, Alberta)

Answer: Hi, Patrick:

I don't know what the rules are in each individual Province. Your best bet is to contact ServiceAlberta. Their web link is:

http://www.servicealberta.ca/contact.cfm

Good luck!

Bob

Question: I recently pulled a 68 dodge charger out of a salvage yard. It has the fender tag but no title or vin tag. Before I put any time or money in it, is it possible to get a vin and ownership for it and where or how do I go about it? (From: marty in Ontario)

Answer: Marty,

It's possible, but you need to contact the Ontario Ministry of Transport to find out the exact procedure you have to follow to get a new VIN number issued for your vehicle.

Best of luck,

Bob

Question: Hi i am looking at buying a 66 chevelle malibu ss with a 283 eng.The vin.613667018719 can you please decode this for me?
Thank you Nick
(From: nick in barrie ontario)

Answer: Hi, Nick:

OK, here you go:

6 = Year = 1966
1 = Make = Chevrolet
36 = Model/Series = Malibu V8
67 = Body Style = 2 Door Convertible Coupe
0 = Assembly Plant = Oshawa, Ontario
18719 = Sequential Serial Number.

According to the information I have, this car is not a real SS. A real SS would have had a model series of 38, not 36. Also, for 1966, no Malibu SS were made in Canada as they were imported from the US.

Hope this helps you out,

Bob

Question: I bought a 65 Pontiac Laurentian, 4 door hard top. What can you tell me about the history of this car. Where can I find a parts catalog? It has a 283 engine. (From: Kevin Tharrett in USA)

Answer: Kevin,

Canadian Pontiacs used Chevrolet chassis and US style bodies.

Most of the mechanical parts of your car should be the same as the same year Chevrolet Bel-Air.

It might be hard to find a Canadian parts catalogue, but if anyone has one it would be Ken McGee in Goderich, Ontario. Here is a link to his web site:

http://www.kenmcgeeautobooks.com/

Good luck!

Bob

Question: I have a bad squeek in the rear end of my 65 olds f85. How do I pull the rear axle out. It has a 1/4 inch travel in and out towards the diff. (From: Gord in Milton Ontario)

Answer: Hi, Gord:

Sorry, we're not more than shade tree mechanics here and can't really help you out.

You might have more luck at a technical Oldsmobile forum or bring your car to a local mechanic.

Good luck,

Bob

Question: I have a 67 mustang fastback with no title.when i tried to apply for a title they said my vin number was no good.the door tag is gone and Alabama never issued it a title. According to the number stamed on my fender aprons my vin number is *7--2c2-4167* the 2-3and 7th digit are missing from the vin.please help me what do i do. (From: flint higgins in mcminnville tn)

Answer: Hi, Flint:

I don't know what the rules are in Tennesse, but most Canadian jurisdictions will issue a new VIN tag upon mechanical inspection and verification that the car does not match any that have been reported stolen or have a lien on them.

That being said, your VIN should probably be something like this:

1st digit: 7 = Model Year = 1967
2nd digit: Assembly Plant, B = Oakville; F = Dearborn; r = San Jose; T = Metuchen
3rd & 4th digit: Model/Body Style = 02 = 2 dr. Fastback Mustang
5th Digit = 2 = Engine = 289 V8 2 bbl.
6th through 12th Digit: Sequential Serial Number

So, your VIN is probably something like this:

7T02C2114167

Good luck!

Bob

Question: Hello, me again, I was going to change the oil in my '75 Riviera, 455 engine, some people tell me to use synthetic oil and some people tell me not to use synthetic oil. What is the best to use for the 455 engine?

Thanks, Cory.
(From: Cory Mahon in Mount Pearl, Newfoundland, Canada)

Answer: Cory,

The jury's out on this.

I've heard that synthetic oil can "loosen" old bits of dirt and carbon that have been in your engine for years and years and that these bits can clog the oil passages and bosses, but I have no empirical evidence of this being true.

Personally, I use regular oil and change it often. I figure these old engines were made to run on the stuff, why change now.

Good luck!

Bob

Question: I am restoring a 67 plymouth fury and have run into a small snag. The previous owner seemed to put in a holley carb about 15 to 20 years ago standard 1450. The original throttle cable and linkage seems to be non compatible. I seem to have adj it right but still sometimes it shuts down when stopping because it seems the cable is too short and they added a metal plate with a rib tie. I am baffled. Whats the best way to go about making sure this crucial part is ready....new cable new bracket? (From: Connor in Toronto)

Answer: Hi, Connor:

Personally, I would give National Moparts in Beaverton, Ontario a call (705-426-2993) and see if they have an original carburetor and linkage they can sell me. This will make sure that everything thing fits and is compatible.

Regards,

Bob

Question: I WOULD LIKE TO KNOW WHAT THE VIN NUMBERS MEAN ON A 1941 MERCURY. DO THEY TELL MODEL,WHERE MADE ETC.

(From: ROBERT SALEM in DEARBORN HEIGHTS,MI. USA)

Answer: Bob,

Question: Hi Bob,

I have 2 vin's and I'm not sure what number is the correct vin. Could you look at both and decode them for me so I know what one is correct and what model it is. (One should belong to a 1965 Cadillac) Thanks so much.

Vin #1 - F6207332
Vin #2 - F2507332

Courtney
(From: Courtney in Carrying Place)

Answer: Hi, Courtney:

The correct VIN is #1.

It decodes as follows:

F = Model = DeVille Convertible
6 = Model Year = 1966
207332 = Sequential Serial Number.

The other VIN's second digit does not compute.

Have Fun!

Bob

Question: I'm just replying to your reply about the VIN number of my Meteor.

Why do you think that the VIN says that it's a hardtop when it is a convertible?

I completely restored it from scrap so I don't think someone changed anything before me..... and what does the Y65G or 63G mean? Does that have something to do with the hardtop-convertible situation? Thanks.
(From: Dean in Surrey)

Answer: Hi, Dean:

The VIN you gave me indicates a Hardtop, according to the information I have. I truly don't know what the Y65G means. Your VIN matches model number 63G, a 2 door Hardtop Meteor Montcalm S33.

The only thing that might have happened is that your car might had been scrapped or declared a total loss once before you got it and someone used a VIN from another car to get the car registered again.

That's the best I can do. If you want to take it further, you can contact a licensed appraiser, such as Patrick Smith from PHS Appraisals. He might be able to make more sense of your situation. Bear in mind that PHS is a business and he charges for his services. Patrick can be reached at pa67smith@yahoo.com.

Good luck!

Question: we have a 1977 450 slu mercedes benz (gray market) and I am trying to decode the vin number but having a problem because it is only 14 numbers. Can you help?
The vin # is 10702412020210

Thank you very much
(From: mary burnash in syracuse ny usa)

Answer: Hi, Mary:

Sorry, i don't have much information on German built cars, but the info I do have says that a Mercedes Benz VIN number should start with the letters WD.

Bob

Question: I have a 1983 Mustang convertible. The motor for top will work to put it down but it will not put it back up. Said it takes transmission oil but where do you put the oil in is my question . If anyone knows please let me know. Thanks. (From: virginia laforce in connecticut)

Answer: Virginia,

Most convertible tops have a reservoir near the motor in the back that contains hydraulic fluid. Most of the time, transmission fluid is used to raise and lower the top.

If you don't know where your reservoir is, take your Mustang to your local Ford dealer and ask one of the service advisors to point it out to you.

Jiffy Lube or similar shop can also show you where it is and how to fill it.

Good luck!

Bob

Question: Hi there, hopefully somebody can help me - my dad had two Ford Galaxie convertibles and we're trying to determine what the VINs tell us about these cars. We believe they're both 1965 500 models, but wanted to confirm if possible. Also wondering what the original engine was supposed to be (does the VIN give this info?). Basically we'd like to know any info that can be gleaned from these VINs.

VIN #1: 476A65L808973

Vin #2: 476A65L709703

Thanks in advance for any help, we've had no luck going through Ford Canada and are stuck!

Denise
(From: Denise in Vancouver area)

Answer: Hi, Denise:

Here you go:

VIN # 1

4 = Make = Ford V8
76A = Series/Body Style = Galaxie 500 2 Door Convertible
65 = Model Year = 1965
L = Assembly Plant = Oakville, Ontario - Left hand drive
808973 = Sequential Serial Number

VIN # 2 is an identical car to VIN # 1 except that it was made sooner in the model year. The model year started at 700001, so VIN # 2 is the 9,702nd car made in Oakville in model year 1965 and VIN # 1 is the 108,971st car made in model year 1965.

Unfortunately, the engine codes are not included on the VIN but might be included on the body plate located under the hood. There were 4 codes for full size cars in 1965:

C = 240 cu in 6 cylinder
F = 289 cu in 2 bbl. V8
G = 352 cu in 2 bbl. V8
J = 390 cu in 4 bbl. V8

Hope this helps.

Bob

Question: I am restoring a 1948 Chevrolet Fleetmaster Town Sedan built in Canada. I noticed that the window regulators and inside door handles have square shafts on then, while the American versions have splined shafts. I also noticed that the trunk lid seems a little different. I was hoping to find out what other differences I might come across while replacing parts on it. Thankyou in advance for any help you might give me

Joe
(From: Joe Eaton in Vancouver, WA, USA)

Answer: Hi, Joe:

Yes, a lot of the small mechanical bits were sourced locally or shared across other makes (Pontiac, Buick, Oldsmobile) also built in Oshawa, which explains the difference in your window handles.

As far as I know though, the bodies from Postwar on were identical between the US and Canada, the only differences were some trim and a slighly different model lineup.

Cheers!

Bob

Question: I'm just replying to your question....... Everything that I Know about the car says that it is a 1966 but some information I got said that it was a 1965 hardtop so I just want to know what you can tell me. Thanks.

Question: I have a convertible Meteor and I would like to know what the vin number translates to: 6B97H550144 Y65G. Thanks.
Dean (From: Dean in Surrey, Canada)

Answer: Dean,

What model year is your Meteor?

Thanks,

Bob
(From: Dean in Surrey)

Answer: Hi, Dean:

Your VIN decodes as follows:

6 = Model Year = 1966
B = Assembly Plant = Oakville, ON
97 = Model/Series/Body Style = Meteor Montcalm S-33 2 Door Hardtop, 5 Passenger.
H = Engine = 390 2bbl V8
550144 = Sequential Serial Number

Y65G is a bit of a mystery as the model number of your Meteor is 63G.

Nice Car! Have fun with it!

Question: What size of tire do I put on my 67 Pont Parisienne? I have 7x15" chrome reverse smoothies. What size of tire do I put on them so I don't have clearance problems? Thanks (From: Elerd Eyolfson in Gimli Manitoba)

Answer: Hi, Elerd:

Your car originally came with 14" wheels and G-78-14's or H-78-14's.

If you want a stock looking tire, you could probably go with a 225/75R-15 tire. The trick is to try to get as close as possible to the outside diameter of the old tire to make sure that your speedo is correct as well as having no body/suspension contact issues.

However, it's best to visit your local tire dealer and check with them.

Cheers!

Bob

Question: My parents are celebrating their 50th wedding anniversary and I was wondering if there is anywhere I might be able to rent them an 1958 automobile for the day. (they will be in Gravenhurst). Just curious if such a service exists. Any help would be great! (From: John Wilson in Milton, Ontario)

Answer: Hi, John:

Like I've mentioned before, most old car guys are way too fussy to rent out their cars.

You might be able to find someone in a local car club to chauffeur your folks around, though.

Visit a local cruise night in your area and ask around!

Good luck!

I am wondering where i can find an ignition for this car. If someone would know, that wouid be nice, and if not, that is ok.
(From: Zach in Saskatoon, Sk)

Answer: Hi, Zach:

You should be able to find an ignition switch and keys at pretty much any automotive flea market or swap meet.

Otherwise, get yourself a subscription to "Old Autos" (printed in Ontario) or a copy of a current Hemmings Motor news. you're bound to find one there.

Good luck!

Question: I just bought a 1968 Beaumont. I was just wondering where to look for all the different parts. for example front fenders, floor pans, trunk pans, etc. Are Chevelle parts as close as I am going to get?? If possible could you give me some canadian sites to look at or even american if necessary? Thanks. (From: Dave in Taber, Ab.)

Answer: Hi, Dave:

Chevelle mechanical and body parts can be used on your Beaumont. Where the cars differ is interior and exterior trim, and some of those trim bits can be pretty hard to find if you insist on originality.

For parts, you can try Antique Chevrolet parts in Oakville Ontario. Their website is:

http://www.antiquechev.com/chevelle/index.htm

Good luck!

Question: How can I find out if there are anymore 1975 Buick Riviera GS's in Newfoundland? I got all the info from GM and they gave me very good detailed info about my Riv. I'd like to know now if there are any others in this province, as I get alot of people who say they haven't seen a car like mine around here before.

Signed, newly Riviera crazy, and the wife is getting fed up, LOL!!!!
(From: Cory in Mount Pearl, Newfoundland)

Answer: Hi, Cory:

Short of starting you own Riviera registry, unless you have a friend at the Newfoundland DOT, there's no way to find out how many 1975 Buick Riviera GS's are left on the Rock.

My guess is not many!

Cheers!

Question: i am the owner of a chevy belair 1962 and the paint code on the ID plate is : T

I would like to have the dupont paint code

tyou
(From: serge bedard in montreal)

Answer: Hi, Serge:

Your colour was called "Autumn Gold Metallic #2".

Sorry, I don't have the Dupont paint code number. Remember that Canadian made paint colours don't always have an equivalent in US made cars and therefore, it isn't always easy to colour match them.

Good luck!

Bob

Question: Ok,

I was givin a Nova SS that i need help with. There is no engine. So do I restore the car the find an engine, or does it matter that an engine is in it for painting and such.

As well, I a twelve # vin. what number represents the year made.

Steve
(From: steve-o in muskoka)

Answer: Steve-O:

You can restore the car without having an engine.

The "Year" digit changed year to year, and US is different from Canada, so send me your VIN and what year you think the car might be and I'll try and decode it for you.

Cheers!

Bob

Question: Hi.

I bought a 1957 Chevrolet 210 recently and the owner said the car had a V8 originally.

I want to find out if that's correct,can you help me?

The VIN number is: B57K190541

Thanks!
(From: Steinar in Norway)

Answer: Hi, Steinar:

If your car had been made with a V8, the first digit of the VIN would have been "V".

As it is, your VIN decodes as the following:

B = Series = 210 6 Cylinder
57 = Model Year = 1957
K = Assembly Plant = Kansas City, MO.
190541 = Sequential Serial Number

Hope that answers your question!

Bob

Question: I HAVE A 1969 CONV BEAUMONT THAT I'AM RESTORING .WONDERING HOW MANY WERE MADE, AND IF THEY CAME WITH 427. (From: mike kollinger in vanderhoof bc)

Answer: Hi, Mike:

I don't have specific production figures by model for Beaumonts, but there were 10,871 Beaumonts made for 1969, which was the last year of production.

The largest engine offered in Beaumonts in 1969 was the 396 cu/in 4 barrel engine.

Question: Combien il y a u de Meteor
Montcalm S33 1968 avec moteur 428 transmission manuel contruite au canada.
(From: gilles roy in audet quebec canada)

Answer: Bonjour, Gilles:

Salutations,

Bob

Question: My husband is looking for 2 engine frame brackets for a 455 engine on a 1973 Delta 88. Any ideas where we can find them? we've looked everywhere. Thanks!!!!

Signed, a wife who would like her husband out of the garage some day soon.

Hmmm. Old car fever is terminal, you might never get him out of the garage, even when the car is completed.

I don't know too many businesses in the USA, but you can try the following link:

Question: My '75 Riviera GS has a torque of 345 @ 2000 rpm, would that be considered good?

Thanks again, you guys are great.

Question: I have a 1984 Jaguar ( 4 door Vandenplas - V12 ) in excellent condition inside & out, unique sky blue colour, creme leather interior. I can't seem to find any place to get a value price on this for insurance purposes. Any advice or ideas?? And how old does a car have to be to be classified as a classic? (From: William Curtis in Calgary,AB.)

Answer: Hi, William:

Most insurance companies will insist that a car over 15 years old get appraised to set a replacement value.

Appraisals only cost about $100 and are well worth the money.

Your Insurance Company can recommend one in your area if you don't already know of one.

Bob

Question: Do you know how to decode my Ford Model A VIN #

CKL58257

Question: Hi Bob,

I have inherited my father's 1972 American Motors Javelin. My sons are investigating the possibility of fixing it up. It has very low mileage approx. 50,000 miles.
It's in good condition - a couple of small holes in the body and needs a new trunk lid.
Could you please give me an idea of what the car is worth.

thank you
(From: Nancy Pell in Hamilton, Ont)

Answer: Hi, Nancy:

Depending on the actual condition, your car is worth between $2500 and $7500.

Bob

Question: Sorry,

One more quick question. How do I find out what the original carpet color was. I believe that it was Ford Blue. but how do I know for sure?

thanks again,

Matthew
(From: Matthew in Regina)

Answer: Matthew,

Some cars have the trim indicated on the body tag that is located under the hood of your car.

If not, a good bet is to find the original literature or catalgogue for your type of car and have a look inside at the different available colour combinations that were available.

Regards,

Bob

Question: Thanks for the info for the Ford Custom.

Do you have any suggestions were to find some parts like a 58 hubcap? and interior carpet kit?

thanks again
(From: matthew in regina)

Answer: Hi, Matthew:

Hubcaps you can find at an automotive flea market or swap meet.

The carpet kit should be easy enough to find as a reproduction. Try 1A Auto: http://www.1aauto.com/

Good luck!

Question: i have a 69 Chevrolet sports sedan, Pillarless by the number st69-16439.

Where can I possibly track down more info on this vehicle. It is a factory RHD build with a 327, 2 speed Powerglide.

Is the vehicle original basically is what I wish to determine b4 it is restored. Where and how do I trace it's history?
(From: joel foster in australia)

Answer: Joel,

If your car was built in Canada, you can get your car's history by contacting a Professional Appraisal company such as PHS Appraisals. Patrick Smith of PHS has many years experience and can get you all the information you need for a reasonable fee.

He can be contacted at pa67smith@yahoo.com

Question: I have a 66 cobra 427 I am trying to have it safetied now they are saying I have to have wippers and defrost on a car that has no roof and certainly isnt going to be driven in the rain or snow is there any thing I can do (From: brandi in ontario)

Answer: Hi, Brandi:

I'm afraid that you won't have much luck fighting City Hall (or the MTO) on this one.

Not that I am suggesting that different inspectors would judge your car differently, but you might want to ask the Hot Rodders at your local Cruise Night where they might have gotten their cars safetied and if they experienced any problems.

Remember, there's always a solution.

Cheers!

Question: Hello, me again. My 1975 Riviera is a G/S. How can I find out if is a true G/S or if someone just stuck the emblems on the side? Also, my car was originaly built in Flint and shipped to Alberta. When did they change the speedomoters from Miles to Kilomoters, and can i get a speedomoter that shows km's for a '75 Riv? (VIN 4Z87T5H543693) just in case you need it.

Thanks for all you help,

Cory.
(From: Cory in Mount Pearl, NL, Canada)

Answer: Hi, Cory:

As I told you before, For a full history of your car, you can contact an appraisal service like PHS Appraisals (pa67smith@yahoo.com) or GM Canada Vintage services. Both will supply you with a history of your vehicle for a reasonable fee. The serial number can't tell us if it's a GS.

As for your speedometer, cars didn't go metric in Canada until 1978, which means that speedometers and odometers in Canada were in miles when your car was built. Your only choice is to try and find one that might have been shipped to Europe (but good luck finding one!)

Cheers!

Question: I have a 1955 Pontiac, but am stumped on the Serial Number. It is a 2 dr hardtop Laurentian, V8. I have 520Q3705170 on the registration & receipt. I have 52037815170 on a metal plate. We made one car out of two & thought we lost the plate, but are wondering now, if it is wrong on the registration. I believe the Q is wrong (should be a 0?) Also on the metal plate, it says Model # 20-37D. Thanks for your help. (From: Wayne in NW Ontario Canada)

Answer: Hi, Wayne:

Here's how your VIN decodes:

5 = Model year = 1955
2 = Make = Pontiac
0 = Series = Laurentian
37 = Body Style = 2 door hardtop
8 = Cylinders = V8
15170 = Sequential Serial Number

You're quite right, the Q is a slipped digit.

20-37D is the same sequence as in the VIN. The addition of the "D" means "Deluxe".

Hope this helps!

Bob

Question: My question is regarding the power steering pump in a 61 chrysler. It rattles and makes an internal noise that gets louder when hot. A friend said the oil was wrong and suggested of all things motor oil. the theory being the oil thinned out to much causing the clatter. My understanding is motor oil would foam. I have thought of using amsoil if I should try some. The oil is topped up.

Thanks for now
Bill
(From: Bill in Vancouver Island)

Answer: Hi, Bill:

Most discussion fourms suggest using ATF-4 automatic transmission fluid in Mopar power steering units made prior to 1962.

That being said, you could probably get your pump rebuilt for about $200 or even buy a remanufactured one at NAPA for less than that.

Good luck!

Bob

Question: My boyfriend has recently purchased a 1964 Ford Falcon with a vin number from the Oakville Ontario ford Plant. However, we cant seam to find a vin decoder for this particular vin. the vin is as follows 762D 64L 936057 this car was built in canada as far as I know. Can you give me a sight for this or any info? (From: Shana in North Bay Ontario)

Answer: Hi, Shana:

Here's your decode:

7 = Make = Falcon 6
62 = Body Style = 2 door sedan
D = Series = Standard
64 = Model Year = 1964
L = Assembly Plant = Oakville, Ontario Left hand Drive
936057 = Sequential Serial Number

Hope this helps!

Bob

Question: I'm realy stumped on this VIN. Would appreciate your assistance:

1963 Ford Falcon

VIN: 537682776A63C

Only thing I can think of is that its the reverse to usual??
C = Canada
63 = Model Year
A = V8
Lost from here.
Thanks
Stan.
(From: Stan in Ontario, Canada)

Answer: Hi, Stan:

What you have there isn't the VIN but the number off the body tag under the hood, commonly known as a warranty tag.

This number is in fact the VIN, except that the first six digits are the serial number, which is usually at the end of the VIN.

Your decode is as follows:

537682 = Sequential serial number
7 = Make = Ford Falcon 6
76A = Body Style = 2 Door Futura Convertible
63 = Model Year = 1963
The last digit, you have as a "C" is probably a poorly stamped "L", which is indicative of the Assembly Plant, in this case "Oakville Ontario, Left hand Drive".

Hope this helps you out!

Bob

Question: I have a 1980 GMC Sierra and there is a noise in the steering. I want to take it apart to find the problem but first I would like to locate a diagram of the steering column to make sure that it is put together right. Could you please tell me where I get can get a diagram of the parts of the steering column in the order they are put together. (From: Keith Hipson in Yarmouth, Nova Scotia)

You can buy a shop manual for your truck from Ken McGee Automotive Literature:

Question: Thanks so much for the info. I have the info from the name plate that you mentioned:

This is how it looks on the plate:

Thank you so much for the assistance.

Cory.
(From: Cory Mahon in Mount Pearl, Newfoundland)

Answer: Hi, Cory:

Here we go:

ST 75 = Model Year = 1975
4 = Car Division = Buick
EZ = Series = Riviera
87 = Body Style = 2 door Hardtop
FL1 = Flint Body Plant
260468 = Production Sequence

TR Z14D = Silver Trim
18 18U PNT = Antique Silver Paint

06 = 6th month = June
B = Second week of the month
AM6 = Split Bench Seat, Front
C04 = Roof covering, vinyl ,padded.

There you go, hope this helps!

Bob

Question: I posted a question a little while ago, about a Buick Riviera. Well I bought my first antique, it is the 1975 Buick Riviera. I was wondering, how can I find the date and place it was manufactured.
Serial # 4Z87T5H543693. Also, how can i get the history of the car, like from when she was built and all the different hands she went through? Thanks for your time, Cory.
(From: Cory Mahon in Mount Pearl, Newfoundland)

Answer: Hi, Cory:

Congratulations on your purchase!

For a full history of your car (up until it was first sold, anyhow), you have a couple of choices. You can contact an appraisal service like PHS Appraisals (pa67smith@yahoo.com) or GM Canada Vintage services. Both will supply you with a history of your vehicle for a reasonable fee.

Your VIN decodes as follows:

4 = Make = Buick
Z = Series = Riviera
87 = Body Style = 2 Door Sport Coupe Hardtop
T = Engine = V8-455
5 = Model Year = 1975
H = Assembly Plant = Flint, Michigan
543693 = Sequential Serial Number

If you send me the information from your body plate (located on the firewall, just below the rear edge of the hood) I can give you more details as to trim and colour.

Hope this helps you out!

Bob

Question: Thanks for the info on the sedan delivery. I have a couple of others that I am hoping that you can help me out with. The first is a Dodge wagon 4 door V8 serial no. D6F59131451. The other is a Ford Fairlane Ranch Wagon 4 door serial #517159871D63L. Any info is greatly appreciated. (From: Susan in Ontario)

Answer: Hi, Susan:

Here's the decode for the Dodge:

D = Make = Dodge
6 = Series = 330 V8
F = Body Style = 2 Seat Suburban Station Wagon
5 = Model Year = 1965
9 = Assembly Plant = Windsor, Ontario
131451 = Sequential Serial Number.

For your Ford, what you gave me is the Warranty number, not the VIN. The last 6 Digits are actually the sequential serial number of the VIN. Here's your decode:

517159 = Sequential Serial Number
8 = Make = Ford Fairlane V8
71D = 4 door station wagon, 6 passenger
63 = Model Year = 1963
L = Assembly Plant = Oakville, Ontario, Left Hand Drive

So the VIN is actually 871D63L517159.

Cheers!

Bob

Question: I have a chevy sedan delivery serial #4127123899 model #12-71. Can you advise what year it is?? thanks (From: Susan in Ontario)

Answer: Hi, Susan:

Hmm... I couldn't find any listing for a Sedan Delivery that corresponds to the VIN that you gave me, and I couldn't find any mention of sedan deliveries for 1964, but it might be listed as a truck. The Body Style 12-71 is for sedan deliveries of the mid 1950's, though I can't find any listing for it for 1964.

Here's what I have for you:

4 = Model Year = 1964
1 = Make = Chevrolet
2 = Series = Biscayne V8
71 = Body Style = Unknown... Perhaps Sedan Delivery.
23899 = Sequential Serial Number

Question: I have a 1949 Chevy Truck. Wanting to get a salvage title for it but unable to locate the vin plate. Any ideas on where to find it? (From: Angi in ohio)

Question: I am looking at a late 69 early 70's Chevy Nova serial number 714279W505631.The information I have indicates this vehicle may have been altered. The #7 appears to be related to a Pontiac Acadian/Beaumont series.Can you please decode this serial number.
Thanks, William
(From: WILLIAM WAMBOLDT in ontario canada)

Answer: Hi, William:

Your car is actually an Acadian, which is a Chevy Nova body trimmed especially for sale by Pontiac Dealers in Canada. It differed from the Nova only in trim and colours. Mechanically, it's identical to a Nova.

Your VIN decodes as follows:

7 = Make = Acadian
14 = Model/Series = Acadian V8
27 = Body Style = 2 door Coupe
9 = Model Year = 1969
W = Assembly Plant = Willow Run, Michigan
505631 = Sequential Serial Number

Hope this helps you out!

Bob

Question: My 1964 Cadillac is eating transmissions. What is needed to switch to a Turbo 400 from my current Hydra-Matic? (From: Arne in Prince Albert)

Answer: Hi, Arne:

Sorry, buddy, we aren't mechanics. Better put your question to a local mechanic you trust or ask around at the local Cruise Nights in your area who might be able to help you out.

One thing I do know, though, is that the Hydra Matic transmissions were some of the best GM ever made. I'm surprised you're having those kind of issues!

Cheers,

Bob

Question: I have a 1958 Chevrolet sedan delivery, 6 cyl. manual trans. the paint code on the trim plate is 1006 the trim code is 801. Can you please let me know the original colour and the production numbers on this car? thanks (From: Bruce Singbeil in Calgary)

Answer: Hi, Bruce:

All I can tell you is that your car was originally Viking Blue. Sorry, I don't have a trim code decoder for the 1950's yet.

As far as I can tell, Sedan Deliveries were considered as a 2 door station wagon and production numbers weren't broken up into different models.

If your car was made in Canada, you can contact GM Vintage Services and get a full history of your car for about 50 bucks. It's a good deal.

Regards,

Bob

Question: hoping you can decode the following vin for me which should be for a 1960 oldsmobile super 88 4 door sedean. the vin is 608m28431.trying to find where would i find the style number tag located in the car. thanks so much sonja. (From: sonja fitzgerald in dolton,Illinois)

Answer: Hi, Sonja:

Your VIN tells us the following:

60 = Model Year = 1960
8 = Series = Super 88
M = Assembly Plant = Lansing, Michigan
28431 = Sequential Serial Number.

The Body Number Plate on your car should be located under the hood below the left windshield wiper transmission.

Good Luck!

Question: I have a 1968 SS 396 Chevelle with rear antenna and the # 07b147369 214169 11 and tr 68 13837 bal11000 and intake is 18438672 could u help me out on these numbers and where can i get the history for this car thanks jerry (From: Jerry Hunter in Webb,Alabama)

Answer: Hi, Jerry:

I don't know where your first series of numbers come from, but I can't find a reference of anything that starts with 07B.

The other numbers are from your Body Plate and tell us the following:

68 = Model Year = 1968
13837 = Style Number = SS 396 2 Sr. Sport Coupe
BAL = Assembly Plant = Baltimore, MD
11000 = Production Sequence Number

The number from your Intake didn't compute in my web searches except for coming up in some other fellow's GTO.

As far as history, GM Canada has a Vintage Services department that can tell you the whole history of Canadian made cars, but not for US made cars. Sorry.

Best of luck,

Bob

Question: I'm about to buy a 1964 GTO. The data plate sequence number doesn't match the vin sequence number. Is this normal? Is the data plate number for the body only and the vin number for the whole assembled car? (From: Ronald Dupre in New Orleans,La.)

Answer: Hi, Ronald:

It's normal that the VIN number doesn't show up on the body tag of 1964 Pontiacs.

Have fun with your new car!

Bob

Question: I recently purchased a 1959 ford
meteor montcalm .
Vin # 265ak59575899 can you tell me the engine size and any other info about this car it was made in oakville ontario .
Can you give me an approx. dollar value it is in fair condition.

Thank you
Mike Moran
(From: michael moran in delevan ny)

Answer: Hi, Mike:

I can decode your VIN for you. For your engine, you need to look at the block to find the serial number. If the numbers start with a YM, it's a 332 cid V8. If the numbers start with a YP, it's a 361 cid V8.

Your VIN decodes as:

2 = Make = Meteor V8
65A = Body Style = 2 Door Hardtop
K = Assembly Plant = Oakville, ON
59 = Model Year = 1959
575899 = Sequential Serial Number.

Your car had a list price of $3284.00 FOB Oakville, Ontario.

Question: I own a 1961 thunderbird the brakes are getting bad ,someone told me the booster is gone .Is this repairable or do I need a new one? If so where can I get one? (From: earl etsell in dryden ontario)

Answer: Hi, Earl:

You should probably replace the booster. If you don't mind remanufactured pats, you can order it from your local NAPA store, with or without the Master Cylinder.

Question: I am looking at buying a 1975 Buick Riviera GS, it has a 455 ci 205 bhp engine, what does the bhp stand for?

Thanks, Cory.
(From: Cory Mahon in Mount Pearl, Newfoundland, Canada)

Answer: Hi, Cory:

BHP refers to Brake Horsepower, which is how they measured an engine's power until about 1971. This is the measure of an engine's horsepower without the loss in power caused by the gearbox, generator, differential, water pump, and other auxiliary components such as alternator, power steering, and AC compressor.

In 1972, all US made vehicles reported their horsepower ratings in SAE Net Horsepower. This reflected the rated power of the engine in as-installed trim, with all accessories and standard intake and exhaust systems.

The 205 Horsepower rating of your Buick Riviera is in SAE Net Horsepower.

Question: I am the original owner of a '78 Chrysler New Yorker Brougham 4dr hdtp. w/tow pkg, fully equipped, 400 cu in. Lean/burn engine, A/C. Good Michelin tires, 5 road wheels inc. spare. Lt green velour interior and green exterior. 8 track. How much I ask for selling price? (From: George S. Platt in Palmer, Alaska)

Answer: Hi, George:

According to the NADA guides, your car is worth between $2900 and $4100, depending on condition.

It probably seems very low to you, but the only thing that drives the price of old cars up above the price of just a used car is demand and desirability, and there isn't yet a market for large 4 door cars from the late 1970's.

Cheers!

Question: I have a 65 Impala convertible with theses tags:
VIN – 516467061818
Body Number 165463 Paint –R
Trim – 886
B70T-10 I am not sure about the ‘B’
Style - 164672-5-5
I got info on a few of the numbers but most of them don't workout, where was it built?
(From: Jim Thievin in Quathiaski Cove BC V0P1N0)

Answer: Hi, Jim:

Like the previous request, I can decode your VIN, but that's it. For the full history of your car, contact GM Vintage services and for about 50 bucks, they can tell you the whole history of your car until it was first sold.

Your VIN decodes as:

5 = Model Year = 1965
1 = Make = Chevrolet
64 = Model/Series = Impala V8
67 = Body Style = 2 door Convertible
0 = Assembly Plant = Oshawa, ON
61818 = Sequential Serial Number.

Paint Code "R" tells us your car was originally Regal Red.

Hope this helps.

COCM3 Can you decode please or help me?
(From: Harland Levesque in Merritt,BC Canada)

Answer: Hi, Harland:

I can decode the VIN for you, but for more information you might want to contact GM Canada Vintage Services and for about 50 bucks, they can give you the entire history of your car.

Their website is:

http://gm.ca/gm/english/shopping/parts/vintage

Your VIN decodes as follows:

6 = Model year = 1966
1 = Make = Chevrolet
36 = Model/Series = Chevelle Malibu V8
7 = Body Style = 2 dr. Convertible
0 = Assy Plant = Oshawa, Ontario
15745 = Sequential Serial Number

Paint code R makes your car originally Regal Red.
Good luck!

Question: Hi Bob,
I have another 440 question. On the vin decode can you tell what engine what suppose to have came with this vehicle. Was a 426 Max Wedge a option or did it come standard.? If the vin doesn't tell me how can I find out what engine this vehicle came equipped with?
I apologize for so many questions but you seem to have a lot of answers that are much appreciated.Thanks again
(From: Courtney in Carrying Place)

Answer: Hi again, Courtney:

The information you're looking for is not included on the VIN but is located on the fender tag. In Mopars of the era, there is a metal tag on the Driver's side inner fender with 4 or five lines of code that include all the info about your car.

I can tell you that Canadian made Dodge 440's were not available with Max Wedge engines. The only engines available for Canadian made cars were the 225 slant six, the 313 V8 or the 383 V8.

Good luck!

Question: Been trying to remove the chrome trim around the front and rear windshields in a 1968 Mercury Comet Sport Coupe 2 door hardtop. Can't seem to get it off and don't want to break the glass or wreck the trim as it is in decent conditon. Any tips? please email me back.

Thanks in advance!
Len
(From: Len Hockley in Welland, Ontario)

Answer: Hi, Len:

Removing this sort of trim is always difficult if you've never done it before, and it seems like every make and model year is different from any other.

I've never removed trim from a Mercury, so I can't help you, Your best bet is to get a shop manual for your car or post your question on our Forum or a Ford specific Forum.

Good luck!

Question: What Is The Difference Between A 1941 Chevy Special Deluxe And A 1941 Master Deluxe (From: Ray in C.A)

Answer: Hi, Ray:

The Master Deluxe was the bottom of the line (some call them bottom feeder) Chevrolet for 1941. The Special Deluxe was the top of the line Chevy for 1941.

There was a difference in base price of about $100.

Question: Is there anyone I can contact regarding rental of antique car/cars for a wedding on PEI summer of 2009? (From: Karen in Nova Scotia)

Answer: Hi, Karen:

Try to contact one of your local antique or classic car clubs and see if any of the members hires out cars for weddings. Many of them do as chauffeur driven vehicles.

That being said, I'm pretty sure that there are no antique car rentals as such.

Good luck,

Bob

Question: Hi Bob,
Could you please decode the following v.i.n for me please 533912065.
It should be 1963 Dodge 440.
If so, is this vehicle the same as a U.S Dart 440? Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks
(From: Courtney McCrory in Carrying Place)

Answer: Hi, Courtney:

Actually, a Canadian Dodge 440 is the same as the U.S. Dodge 440, but using a Plymouth dashboards and upholstery. 440's are full sized cars.

The Dart name was dropped in Canada for 1963, but in the U.S., it replaced the Lancer as the Dodge Compact car, slightly larger than a Plymouth Valiant.

I hope this answers your question.

Regards,

Bob

Question: Can you recommend a website to do a VIN look-up on the ownership history of vehicle (1970 Pontiac Lemans), that was once registered in Canada?

Thanks!
(From: Texaskowgirl in Texas)

Answer: Hi, Texaskowgirl:

As far as I know, there is no central database that can give you the ownership history of old cars. I know that most jurisdictions in Canada don't keep records farther back than 1976, which is when most of the DOT's went to computer records.

You can try a company like Carfax, but I think that they have records only for newer cars.

Good luck,

Bob

Question: I would really like to find a hood emblem for my husbands 1966 Mercury Meteor Convertable. He's been looking everywhere. I don't care how far away it is or how much, please help.... (From: Cari States in Surrey, British Columbia)

Answer: Hi, Cari:

Unfortunately, there are no reproduction parts for 1966 Meteors. There are almost no parts being made for US made Mercurys, let alone a Canadian Market Only model!

My suggestion is to place an ad in Old Autos newspaper (http://www.oldautos.ca/), or you can do like most other people in your situation (me included with my Canadian Valiant) and you can try going to as many Automotive flea markets as you can. If you have a friend in the Toronto area, you could ask them to try to get to the Spring Barrie Flea Market for you, which runs June 5th to 8th about an hour north of the Big Smoke. I've always found what I was looking for there.

Good luck!

Question: this vin tag came with a 1938-9 olds coupe I bought ,would this be correct? gm of canada model-1019,seial 9-101982735,engine-1983077,body serial-710,trim-274,paint-909,Thanks Indian Mike (From: Michael Griffith in Redding,Ca.)

Answer: Hi, Indian Mike:

Well, if you're sure that your car is an Olds, someone has replaced the original nameplate with one from a Chevrolet. Your number corresponds with the following:

9 = Model year = 1939
1 = Make = Chevrolet
0 = Series = Master Deluxe
19 = Body Style = 4 Door sedan with trunk
8 = Assembly Plant = Regina, SK.
2735 = Sequential Serial Number

Your engine serial number matches the range of engines for this model of car. I'm afraid that I dont have all the trim information for cars of this vintage.

GM produced cars in Regina between 1937 and 1941 but did not reopen the plant after WWII.

Hope this helps.

Question: Hello, Iám an enthusiastic of de old cars and Í'am going to buy one soon but I don't understand the diference beetwen a classic and a vintage car, can you explained it for me please ?Thanks (From: MARTHA MORENO in México City, México)

Answer: Hi, Martha:

From Wikepedia:

"The Classic Car Club of America claims to have invented the term Classic car and thus it believes that the true definition of the term is its. According to the CCCA:

A CCCA Classic is a fine or distinctive automobile, either American or foreign built, produced between 1925 and 1948. Generally, a Classic was high-priced when new and was built in limited quantities. Other factors, including engine displacement, custom coachwork and luxury accessories, such as power brakes, power clutch, and "one-shot" or automatic lubrication systems, help determine whether a car is considered to be a Classic.

The Club keeps an exhaustive list of the vehicles it considers Classics, and while any member may petition for a vehicle to join the list, such applications are carefully scrutinized and rarely is a new vehicle type admitted.

This rather exclusive definition of a classic car is not universally followed, however, and this is acknowledged by the CCCA: while it still maintains the true definition of 'classic car' is its, it generally uses terms such as CCCA Classic or the trademarked Full Classic to avoid confusion."

Vintage cars are generally thought to be any car over 20 years old.

I hope this helps.

Question: I Have a 67 Beaumont rag top, I am restoring it and I am wondering if they have a book on the body and drive train. (From: Al Loewen in Winnipeg Manitoba)

Answer: Hi, Al:

You might try Ken McGee Automotive literature about an original shop manual:

(http://www.kenmcgeeautobooks.com/)

Failing that, a Chevelle shop manual, which are easy to find, will fill all your technical needs. Except for some trim items, that year Beaumont is identical to a Chevelle.

Good luck with your restoration.

Question: I am wondering who I would get in contact with, in regards to having a classic car show. (From: Sandra in Hamilton)

Answer: Sandra,

That's a big, vague question but my suggestion is to contact one of your local car clubs. If the Hamilton you live in is in Ontario, there are many old car clubs to choose from.

There's a really good Antique Auto flea market in Ancaster on April 27th, you might want to attend and speak to the organizers there. It's sponsored by the Road Runners Car Club and they can be reached at 905-570-6895

Good Luck!

But, why do you want to know the value of your car BEFORE you see the appraiser?

Question: Good Day Gentlemen. I have a small block GM snowflake aluminum intake manifold with a serial number 3844461. I believe it is from the mid to late 60's. I'm interested in knowing what specific vehicles it was designed for, and if possible what it is worth. It is very good condition. Any help you could give me would be appreciated. (From: Bob Westerviller in Utica, Ohio)

Answer: Bob,

Looks like a Corvette Aluminum intake manifold made in 1964 for the 350 HP 327 and in 1965 for the 365 HP 327, both using Holley carbs.

There are 2 of them currently on eBay, asking between $600 and $700.

Good luck!

Question: Hi -I have a 1968 Pontiac Parisienne. I am try to find out more about the paint colour. On the body plate is a31m40tp2. Below that is st 68 76867 os724760 body then tr 859 1-12-12 9pp paint. I am having a hard time try to find left and right floor pans and trunk pan in Canada. If you have a site for them great. Thank you for you time. (From: d. riley in bancroft,ontario)

Answer: Hi,

Your car is originally Spring Mist Green.

In 1968, full size Canadian Pontiacs were still using the same chassis as Chevrolet, so Chevrolet body parts will fit your car.

Question: I have a 1968 Acadian with the VIN #713278w240460 and i cannot find any information on this car. The motor is stamped #on front of the block is KO412TDS and casting #on back of the block is 3970010. Is this the original motor if not what did it come with ? THANK YOU VERY MUCH (From: william schaap in mission , british columbia,canada)

Answer: Hi, William:

As far as I can tell, #3970010 is a 350 CI V8 which was made from 1969 to 1980.

Your car's VIN decodes as follows:

7 = Make = Canadian Pontiac, Acadian & Beaumont
13 = Model/Series = Acadian 6 Cylinder
27 = Body Style = 2 Door Coupe
8 = Model Year = 1968
W = Assy. Plant = Willow Run, MI
240460 = Sequential Production Number

According to your VIN, your car originally came with a 230 or 250 cubic inch 6 cylinder engine. The 350 Cube V8 in it is from another car.

Bob

Question: is there anywhere i can find a trunk pan for a 1965 mercury meteor convertible? (From: john rempel in winkler mb)

Answer: John,

You probably won't find one for a 1965 Meteor, but it should be identical to one for a Mercury Monterey.

That being said, I wasn't able to find a Canadian source for these parts. I'm afraid that you might have to get some American parts catalogs to get the parts you need.

You should try your luck with Hemmings Motor News.

Good luck,

Bob

Question: I just acquired a 1970 chrysler Newport convertible with the vin# CE27NOC165029. I was able to decode everything with my service manual except the last 6 numbers which they refer to as the vehicle sequence numbers. If you could possibly explain what the 6 numbers(165029) represent I would be indebted to you. Thank-you and keep up the good work. (From: Brian Parnell in Duncan BC Canada)

Answer: Brian,

Vehicle production starts at 10001 for the model year, so this means that your car was the 65,029th one built at the Jefferson Avenue Detroit assembly plant.

Question: Hello. This may be an odd question, but I am wondering if there is a place or a contact of where I can rent a classic car for a day. I am interested in a classic car from the 50's or 60's that my uncle could take my Dad out for a drive in on his 65th birthday this summer. Thanks for your help. (From: Marcie in Durham Region)

Most car rental companies don't rent classic cars.

(From: r. nutter in toronto,canada)

Answer: Hi,

You likely won't find originals for a Canadian made Pontiac.

Your best bet is to purchase as close as you can come to the colour you want for a 1960 Chevrolet Bel-Air. These should fit on your car just fine. Canadian made Pontiacs used Chevrolet Chassis and inner body structure.

Body serial: 2888

The tag is from a 1955 Oldsmobile Super 88 4 door sedan. Here are the details:

5 = Model Year = 1955
3= Make = Oldsmobile
6 = Series = Super 88
69 = Body Style = 4 door sedan

04685 = Sequential Serial Number.

I don't have a listing for that particular paint code or trim.

The car was made in Oshawa, Ontario.

Question: What can you tell me about a 1965 Chrysler Windsor limited edition (canadian market only I think) Can't find any details anywhere? (From: derrek in alberta canada)

Answer: Hi, Derrek:

The Chrysler Windsor was a Canadian Only model that was the entry-level Chrysler, a position held by the Newport in the USA.

All Windsors were made in Canada (Windsor Ontario, of course) except for the the station wagons, which were imported from the USA.

1966 was the last year for the Windsor. With the signing of the Auto Pact, Chrysler models were no longer being made in Canada and all models became one and the same as the USA as of 1967.

I couldn't find any mention of a "Special Edition" Chrysler Windsor anywhere.

Question: On my 65 impala the VIN tag reads 164675D166924. The 7th digit is the plant but I can find no info on what plant the D is. All info shows a lot of other plant codes but no D and I also seen another car on eBay that had a D in it just like mine. Can you help? (From: jerry ginn in chattanooga, tn 37419)

Answer: Hi, Jerry:

Although I don't have anything official to go by, all other GM divisions used "D" for the Atlanta (or Doraville) assembly plant (Chevrolet used "A"), so my guess is that your car was assembled in Atlanta.

Hope this helps,

Bob

Question: I have a Ford Galaxy 500 and was wondering the year. The S# is 8P54F135998. On the data plate is says 30A under the date spot, but I don't know what that means. (From: Erik in Bracken,Sask)

Answer: Hi, Erik:

Your car is a 1968 Ford Galaxie 500 4 door sedan with a 302 Cubic Inch V8 and a 2 bbl carburetor. It was built at the St-Paul Minnesota plant on the 30th of January 1968.

Here's what all the numbers mean:

Date Code: 30 = Day, A = Month = January.

8 = Model Year = 1968
P = Assembly Plant = St-Paul, MN
54 = Series/Model = Galaxie 4 door sedan
F = Engine = 302 V8, 2bbl.
135998 = Sequential Serial Number.

Hope this is what you were looking for.

Question: How can I find out exactly how many cars of a certain make and year were produced? (From: charlynne in Lethbridge, AB)

Answer: Hi, Charlynne:

Unfortunately, there isn't a single place where you can get that information.

The internet has helped, but Automotive Production figures remain a mystery and hard to find commodity, especially if you are looking for Canadian made cars.

You might want to Google the make and model you're looking for and hope you'll find a useful link.

Conversely, you can check your local public library's Reference section and ask the librarian for help.

Good luck!

Question: I have a 1965 Plymouth Sport Fury conv. that came from Canada. It was sold at Hart Motors LTD. in Quebec 4-12-1965 the vin is P8E59160327 I can
not find any information on this car. I think it is the (E) US cars had 10 digets in the vin this has 11 can you help?
Thanks, MIKE.
(From: Mike in Michigan. USA)

Answer: Hi, Mike:

Actually, Canadian VIN's had an extra digit in 1965.

Your car decodes as follows:

P = Make = Plymouth
8 = Series = Sport Fury V8
E = Body Style = Convertible
5 = Model Year = 1965
9 = Assembly Plant = Windsor, Ontario, Canada
160327 = Sequential Serial Number

As for Hart Motors, the only mention I can find of a dealership with this name was a mention in the book "I'll Never Forget My First Car: Stories from Behind the Wheel" by Bill Sherk. Hart Motors was apparently in Dorval, a suburb of Montreal. I've lived in this area for most of my life and don't remember any mention of this dealership.

Hope this helps!

Question: Would anyone know where to find a replacement hood release cable for a 1987 Pontiac Acadian Scooter and also if it is necessary to have this cable to pass a safety inspection?

Thanks
Dave W.
(From: Dave W. in Oshawa, Ontario Canada)

Answer: Dave,

You'll probably have to try and find your part in a salvage yard. Just remember that your car is identical to a same year Chevette.

Your hood will need to be easily opened if you plan on getting your car safetied in Ontario.

Good luck!

Question: I just purchased a 63 Chevy Impala and would like to know what the codes on the trim tag mean:
3B
E63-1847 Body SL 42613
Trim 854 Paint 900
ACC E-X-K-Y-G

Thanks in advance Alan
(From: Alan in Vermont)

Answer: Hi, Alan:

3B is sometimes the date code, meaning the 3rd of February.

I'm not sure about the "E" before your Style code.

Style:
63 = Model Year = 1963
1847 = Body Style = Impala 8 Cylinder 2 dr Sport Coupe

Body:
SL= Body Plant = St-Louis, MO
42613 = Production Sequence

Trim 854: Aqua Vinyl Seats
Paint 900; Tuxedo Black

Accessory codes are hard to decode. The only one on yours I could find is "E", for Tinted Glass.

Bob

Question: I am the 3rd owner of a 1966 Pontiac Grande Parisienne with serial #676657022641. Any information is appreciated. One question I do have though is a good place to get parts ie. drivers side mirror. (From: Lee-Ann Edwards in Winnipeg, Manitoba)

Answer: Hi, Lee-Ann:

Here's your VIN decode:

6 = Year = 1966
7 = Make = Canadian Pontiac
66 = Model/Series = Grande Parisienne V8
57 = Body Style = 2 Door hardtop
0 = Assembly Plant = Oshawa, Ontario
22641 = Sequential Serial Number

Most mechanical parts for your car can be bought anywhere that sells Chevrolet parts. Mechanically, your car and Chevrolets of the same year are the same. For trim, your best bet is to go around automotive flea markets and swap meets and dig until you find one that looks like yours.

Good luck!

Which is best to cool the engine? 6 blade flex factory fan with clutch, 6 blade fan without clutch or electric 8 blade high performance fan. Thank You.

Answer: Darrell,

You best post your question in a Forum more dedicated to trucks, such as http://www.fordtruckclub.com/Home.html.

This club is based in Ontario.

Question: I recently purchased a 1966 Nova SS from Canada. The VIN. NO. on the Canadian title is 61183700641. I believe this a typographical error because the Vin tag on the door frame is 611837000641. (has an extra 0)
I had the verification done yesterday confirming there are 3 zeros on the cars Vin tag. I have no idea why the title shows a zero missing on the title, unless it was a typo. Does anyone know how best to handle this situation with the DMV?
(From: rick Bundy in Bakersfield CA.)

Answer: Hi, Rick:

All your numbers match except for the extra digit. It's obviously a typo.

I would think that taking a digital picture of the actual VIN plate to your local DMV would help them sort this out for you, but then again, I don't know what the California DMV is like when it comes to these issues.

Otherwise, you can post your question in the Forum and hope someone knows the answer.

Bob

Question: Bob - Thanks for your replies a while back - I just wanted to update you and the forum.

GM Canada cannot/ will not assist with cars before 1946 - they have no [read zero] records for that period - you gave me more data. Please don't recommend them for cars before this date as it is a dead path.

Best results came ultimately from the Buick Car Club of America on line forum where a healthy data mine amongst the members exists for Canadian Buicks.

Thanks!
David
(From: David Thomson in Singapore)

Answer: David,

Thanks for the update. GM Vintage Services Website does state "...Only production numbers are available prior to 1946 (sorry, nothing from 1939 to 1945), except for Chevrolet where Engineering Specifications are also available."

Regards,

Bob

Question: Please would you help me decode the following serial number (61314610344) for a model 1314 GMC (Chevrolet) pick up, believed to be 1956 vintage; the aluminum plate on the door post states the body serial number as 3545. Thanks for any assistance you can provide. (From: jamie and Helen Stephen in chemainus, British Columbia)

Answer: Hi, Jamie:

Sorry, I have no truck information to share with you.

Cheers!

Question: Where can I find a repro or NOS speedo lens and speedo for a 65 Beaumont (Canadian Chevelle) 200 kph speedo lens w/gauges? Any help would be appreciated. (From: jim oneal in Baltimore Md)

Answer: Hi, Jim:

First, you might have a really hard time finding NOS parts for your Beaumont. There just weren't that many of them made, so stocks of parts ran out long ago.

Second, you won't find a speedometer in Kilometers per Hour. Canada didn't start using the Metric system unitl 1976. Your car originally came with an Imperial (MPH) speedometer.

I suggest that you contact one of the members of the Canadian Classic Chevelles & Beaumonts Club, they may be able to steer you in the right direction.

Their website is:

Good luck,

Bob

Question: I am interested in buying a Chev G20 conversion van when I come to the states next year but cannot drive it left hand drive in South Australia. Did they make a right hand drive model for the Canadian market? I am looking at a late 80's or early 90's model. Thanks for the time. (From: noel wheeler in adelaide south australia)

Answer: Hi, Noel:

You got the wrong information, Mate - Canada does not use Right Hand Drive cars or trucks.

Bob

Question: I recently bought an '86 Fiero GT and I had a conversation with a friend about if and when it would be considered a classic. If so what would the requirements be? (From: David in Paris Ont)

Answer: Hi, David:

When your car is considered a classic will be up to the market. Some cars will never be classics, but yours probably will be due to its interesting design and relative scarcity.

In Ontario, a vehicle becomes "Historic" after 30 years.

Hope this helps!

Here's what I can tell you about your car:

05D = Build Date = 4 week of May 1966
66 = Model Year = 1966
15411 = Model/Body Style = Biscayne 2 dr. Sedan

860 = Interior Colour = Fawn.Cloth & Vinyl. Seat type: Bench. Used for: Biscayne 2 & 4 door sedans.

Question: Hi I have one more question about my car(1972 Pontiac Ventura ll) I need to replace the seats did they ever come with buckets, also are nova seats interchangeable with them? Thanks for the VIN info. (From: Bryan in Victoria BC)

Answer: Hi, Bryan:

Yes, "Strato Bucket Seats" were an option in 1972.

As for whether Nova seats would fit, both cars were built on the same chassis, so my guess is that yes, Nova seats should fit in your Ventura II.

Have Fun!

Bob

Question: I have a 72 cutlass supreme convertible were can I locate the vin on the frame or anywhere else beside the dash my dash covers part of the vin. (From: james young in carrollton ky)

Answer: Hi, James:

From "RealOldsPower" Forum: ..."Spec was that one of the two locations must be legible. The two locations are shown in the assembly manual for the particular car. They are on the top surface of the frame (toward the underbody) on the drivers side.

At Lansing, we hit it twice with a huge automatic machine that rolled the number from one end to another. First one (near the trans crossmember) went from left to right, and second one (behind the rear wheel along the kick up area) was rolled right to left. An inspector verified that at least one was completely legible. If not a repairman "fixed" it with a hand stamp and a BFH.

The frame was upside down at this time and not easy to inspect or repair, so it was inspected and repaired as necessary after the frame was flipped over, right before the engine trans was dropped into place.

Not sure what happened at the assembly plants, pretty sure GM had a standard on this and the spec was the same fro the other makes, just not sure how or where they did it in their processes. The fact that they had different makes made changing the digits in the stamping machine a little more complicated than ours"

I hope this helps you out,

Bob

Question: Hi, I own a canadian assembled right hand drive 1956 4 door belair. I have fully restored the car from top to bottom and the only part missing is the dash trim insert.Everything I find is for a left hand drive car ?? Can you help. Kia ora from new zealand. (From: Patrick Mckay in New Zealand)

Answer: Hi, Patrick:

Sorry, but I can't help you - All cars in Canada are left hand drive. Even if your car was manufactured here, all right hand drive units (as well as all RHD parts) were shipped to the Commonwealth countries that imported them at the time of manufacture. No RHD parts remained in Canada.

Good luck in your search,

Bob

Question: Hi, I would like to know if you can tell me what engine my 66 corvette came with by the vin code? If not how can I get the info???
Very Much Appreciated!

Perry

Vin 194676S113049
(From: Perry Mckinny in Sudbury ont.)

Answer: Hi, Perry:

Good question!

But the VIN won't tell us which engine your car had.

You can contact Patrick Smith of PHS Appraisals (pa67smith@yahoo.com) or GM Canada Vintage Services (http://www.gmcanada.com/gm/english/shopping/parts/vintage) and for a reasonable fee, they can tell you all you want to know about your car.

If you want to know right away if the engine that's in the car now is the original one, the VIN should be stamped on the block. The V-8 engines utilized the block code pad immediately forward of the right hand cylinder head. If the VIN on the block matches the one on your registration, you're done!

BTW, your VIN decodes as follows:
1 = Make = Chevrolet
94 = Series = Corvette
67 = Body Style = Convertible
6 = Model Year = 1966
S = Assembly Plant = St-Louis, MO
113049 = Sequential Serial Number

Good Luck!

Bob

Question: Hi:

I've been here before asking about carpet for my 1958 Laurentian. I now got it and it fits perfect. You were right it was for a 58 Bel Air :-).......
New problem!! i need a new brake booster (master cylinder) and I now have a 1 circuit brake line but I want a 2 line circuit but still keep my drum brakes...
I've seen one at Summit Racing. Classic brake booster no.CLP-5564bb2-9. Is that what I need ?? Or can you give me a better tip.

Anders Pedersen
Denmark
(From: anders pedersen in denmark)

Answer: Hi again, Anders:

The Booster you're looking at is for disc/drum setups. If you want to keep all drum, I think you would need a different proportioning valve, but I'm not enough of a mechanic to tell you any more.

If I were you, I'd call MPB and ask one of their Customer Service people. Brakes is all this company does:

Question: Hi,

Last June I bought a 1965 Ford Custom 2 dr with a 6 cyl. auto. There seems to be a problem with the vin#. I'm not sure if they are in the right order. The ownership reads # 746445662E65L but the door plate reads #662E65L746445, so if you can give me some help trying to figure this problem out that would help a lot. And can you tell me what they all mean.

Thanks
(From: joe in toronto ontario)

Answer: Hi, Joe:

The actual VIN is the one on the door plate. The one on your registration starts with the seri
